Ft. Stanton

Ft. Stanton

A site that has seen a lot of history - a fort set up by Kit Carson and developed to fight Indians. Later it was a Union fort during the Civil War. The Union forces abandoned it when the Confederates were nearing it, setting fire to the buildings. It didn't all burn and was then occupied by the Confederates, then abandoned. It was used to house detained German sailors prior to the US entering WWII, then was used to detain both German and Japanese. Finally it was used as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients.
