There's a number of hiking trails through the mountains.  We didn't try to hike to the top of Mt. San Jacinto, we just walked around the valley just west of the terminal and went to some additional desert over-looks.  They've paved the way from the terminal down to the Long Valley.  As you can see, it's a grade (though not impossibly steep).
